Law Technology News Announces Paralegal Technology Institute at LegalTech West Coast

Incisive Media’s Law Technology News has announced the agenda and speakers for its inaugural Paralegal Technology Institute West to take place June 24-25, 2009 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, in conjunction with the upcoming LegalTech West Coast 2009 conference in Los Angeles. Targeted to paralegals, legal assistants, litigation support services and case managers, the two-day conference will focus on litigation technology and related best practices, in areas including e-discovery, trial presentation and litigation data management. Conference delegates are invited to attend the exhibit hall and general sessions of LegalTech West Coast at no additional charge. A complete conference agenda and details are available on the Web at www.lawtechnews.com/paralegalwest.

The program will examine technology and best practices in areas including document management; software and budget decisions; case management and trial assignments. Key sessions will include:

  • “10 Success Tips from Successful E-Discovery Paralegals”
  • “Getting the Right Message to the Jury with Trial Presentations”
  • “The Growing Importance of Metadata Preservation of E-Discovery”
  • “Malpractice Risks Facing Paralegals”
  • “Mastering Data Base Design & Multiple Case Management”

Industry icon, Browning Marean, partner at DLA Piper’s San Diego office, will join the speaker faculty to discuss "Budgeting and Project Management for E-discovery - Skills You Need!"

“Effectively managing electronic evidence is critical to paralegals handling cases of every size. Come share ideas with your colleagues and industry experts, and learn from the vast array of e-technology vendors on the LegalTech exhibit floor,” said conference co-chair Gary L. Melhuish, director of litigation support services, Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP.

“We believe this program will be incredibly informative and helpful to paralegals who are involved in e-discovery, case management and trial presentation,” added co-chair John Cleaves, litigation support manager, Latham & Watkins LLP. “This is a great chance to meet other paralegals and litigation support staff who have solved problems similar to the ones you may be facing.”

The program has been approved for 10.5 CLE (certified legal assistant education credits) through the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA).

While the focus and objectives of IoT initiatives are many and diverse, they all share a few common attributes, and one of those is the network. Commonly, that network includes the Internet, over which there isn't any real control for performance and availability. Or is there? The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin...
