JavaOne - Sun Supports OpenID, Seeks Friends

OpenID is currently limited to facilitating low-risk transactions like blog comments

Sun has opened a new initiative in support of OpenID, the decentralized, web-friendly single sign-on mechanism used across different web sites.

OpenID is currently limited to facilitating low-risk transactions like blog comments. Sun wants to explore ways of toughening it up and expanding its use. It's seeking outside input.

It's also offering an OpenID Provider service to Sun employees that will identify them as such on OpenID-accepting web sites and fetch them an employee discount. Sun says it will work with partners to extend special services on that basis.

OpenID Provider is built using OpenSSO, the open source project under Java System Access Manager and Java Federation Manager as well as OpenDS, the open source project providing Sun's next-generation services. Both these project now include OpenID extensions.

Sun said it will OpenID-enable its own web sites once it figures out how.
