EntreTech Forum Introduces Descience...the Fusion of Fashion Design and Science at The Doffie Studio.

Cambridge, MA, March 21, 2014 --(PR.com)-- EntreTech Forum introduces Descience...the Fusion of Fashion Design & Science, an Innovation Event at The Doffie Studio

Two disparate worlds collided in a very cool way as fashion and science came together on March 18th at the Doffie Studio in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Kicking off EntreTech’s “Innovation Series,” Descience unveiled their new design concept along with key members of the team behind this global initiative. The forum brought together a broad group of people from premier universities including MIT, Harvard, UMass and the Koch Institute.

Yuly Fuentes, the project’s Executive Director, led the Forum which explored the many similarities between the disciplines of science and design. She spoke passionately about her brainchild which she first conceived when attending MassArt’s Studio 621 fashion show last spring. The panelists included premier scientists and fashion designers who shared the collaborative process fueling inspiration for their new fashion designs. The climax of the evening was a fashion show that provided a “sneak peek” into the caliber of designs that will be showcased at the Descience Runway Event on September 29th at the MIT Media Lab.

Fuentes introduced Claire Jarvis, the Fashion Director, Isidora Valdés, Creative Business Director and Patricia Torregrosa, the Science Director, who weighed in by video from Stockholm where she is currently defending her PhD Thesis. Jarvis discussed how she and Torregrosa created a process by which scientists and designers could choose one another and collaborate to make a runway look that explores the images and concepts from the scientists’ work. Valdés set the stage for the coming runway show, promising that it would be an event to remember because “If we want people to fall in love with science, we have to attack all five senses.”

Additional panelists included scientist Eduardo Villablanca, an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School and Laura Indolfi, a PostDoc at MIT. Designers were represented by Carlos Villamil, whose designs focus on zero waste and sustainability. Indolfi and Villamil make up one of the 61 teams that are competing to win a $3,000 prize in September. Designer, Amanda Curtis, who is currently launching “The 19th Amendment” shared insights into her “Kickstarter for Fashion” project. Other “descientists” teams like the “The Hijackers”, comprised of scientist Cindy Lai and Kyley Smithers, were meeting in person for the first time at this event.

One of the event’s highlights was the window that was provided into the team’s creative process. The audience was treated to a slide of Vilamil’s sketchbook where, in the interest of communication, this biomedical researcher and fashion designer had created rough sketches explaining the science, the design and the construction of the look they will create for the Descience Runway. Particularly interesting to the designers was a new initiative by Jessica Cambry of “Weekender Education” which offers training in new 3D printing technologies.

The event closed with a fashion show featuring the work of Carlos Villamil and Amanda Curtis. Making full use of the incredibly beautiful studio, models descended from a loft staircase wearing high-impact gowns. Villamil’s gorgeous fuchsia creation stunned guests with an asymmetrical skirt and lots of leg which composed of discarded felt remnants. Curtis showcased a beautiful red number that called to mind an evil queen and a 1940’s femme fatale. The next Descience Event will take place on April 25th at 6 pm at the MIT Museum where they plan to take the Cambridge Science Festival by storm.

WebRTC is about the data channel as much as about video and audio conferencing. However, basically all commercial WebRTC applications have been built with a focus on audio and video. The handling of “data” has been limited to text chat and file download – all other data sharing seems to end with screensharing. What is holding back a more intensive use of peer-to-peer data?
