Happy Independence Day!

The This Week in Cloud team wishes you a safe and happy Independence Day! We’ll be taking a break from our coverage next week, but will resume the following week with all the latest cloud news.

Cloud News

  • GE officially entered into the cloud computing market, announcing plans to provide cloud-based analytics services for its industrial customers, according to this Network World article. The move reinforces a growing trend by both providers and end users to capture and actually get value from big data analytics.

  • Concerns about cloud security are flaring after recent revelations about government data-mining, according to this Reuters article. Reports that the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) secretly gathers user data from nine Internet companies, including Microsoft and Google, are creating new doubts in cloud computing.

  • The European Commission thinks cloud service contracts are still too complex and wants to simplify the buying of cloud services by making boilerplate contracts available, according to this ZDNet article. The commission is calling for the help of experts in drafting the contracts, which they plan to release in 2014.

Let go of the security blanket and embrace cloud computing

“Security is the number one barrier to cloud adoption." So says every Cloud Service Provider (CSP) executive I've spoken with over the last two years as part of the Cloud Luminaries program. Or they did until recently, anyway. Don't get me wrong - security is still a major barrier to cloud adoption, but I've noticed a shift in the way that CSP executives are talking about security as it relates to their customers.

When I ask Steve Mills, CIO of Rackspace, about the number one barrier to cloud adoption, he replied: "...what we hear the most about is security, but I think that people are getting pretty comfortable that you can protect data in the cloud and that you can take advantage of the cloud economy and still protect the things that are important to you."
