Advanced Academics, a leading online learning provider for grades 6-12 that is part of the DeVry family of high-quality educational institutions, announced today it has launched an app for iOS devices giving its students mobile access to the proprietary Robust Online Academic Delivery System (R.O.A.D.S). learning management system. With the ROADS app, students enrolled in Advanced Academics online programs can access their grades, post to discussion boards and get real-time assistance from teachers via an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch®.
While the majority of U.S. teenagers use laptop or desktop computers to access the Internet, research shows they are increasingly using mobile devices such as cell phones and tablet computers. A July 2011 survey from the Pew Research Center Internet & American Life Project found 49 percent of teens ages 12 to 17 use cell phones to connect to the Internet, while 16 percent use tablets.
“With our new mobile learning app, Advanced Academics adds to the innovative ways we help our students learn how and where they learn best,” said Robert York, Advanced Academics president. “The ROADS app gives students increased flexibility by being able to access grades and other important data from a smartphone or tablet, as well as a personal computer. Unlike many other online learning apps, ROADS goes beyond simple quizzes or rote math and science facts to connect students with caring, experienced teachers who can help them during critical learning moments, whether those moments occur in the library, a coffee shop or their own bedroom.”
The ROADS app debuts several industry-leading capabilities including:
- Chat – Students have real-time access to certified teachers 24 hours a day, Monday through Friday. Students can communicate with teachers via instant message, as well as a virtual whiteboard, which instructors can use to illustrate math and other concepts.
- Classmail – Students can easily check and respond to email messages from instructors and other students.
- Classroom – Students can quickly check grades and read and respond to discussion threads for their classes.
The ROADS app can be downloaded from the iTunes® App Store. Users must be a student of a school that uses the Advanced Academics R.O.A.D.S. learning management system. An Android™ version of the application is under development.
