In recognition of Stalking Awareness Month and as part of Data Privacy Day, Reputation.com will offer its MyPrivacy service to help domestic violence victims remove personally identifiable information from the Internet and block third parties who track Web surfing activities. This service empowers victims of domestic violence – many of whom have also been stalked – by helping them take control and feel safer both online and offline.
"We're proud to be partnering with Reputation.com this Data Privacy Day 2013 to raise awareness about the importance of data privacy for victims of domestic violence," said Michael Kaiser, executive director of the National Cyber Security Alliance. "The Internet is an amazing tool for connecting with people and sharing information, but unfortunately, people are also victimized by resourceful cyber criminals. Users and victims must be educated to recognize the signs of stalking and to take action to seek help."
"So much is available about each of us online – our names, addresses, ages, income, even phone numbers," said Michael Fertik, CEO and Founder of Reputation.com. "For domestic violence victims, that online information represents a big offline risk. MyPrivacy helps them take control of their digital footprint and enhance their personal safety. We're proud to offer that for free as part of our participation in National Cyber Security Alliance's Data Privacy Day."
About National Stalking Awareness Month
January is also National Stalking Awareness Month – an effort dedicated to educating the public about the dangers related to the crime of stalking both online and offline. The Stalking Resource Center states that one in four victims report that the stalker uses technology, such as computers, global positioning system devices, or hidden cameras, to track the victim's daily activities. NCSA encourages everyone to visit www.staysafeonline.org for a variety of tips on how to avoid becoming a victim of cyber crime. In addition, an abundance of tools and information about how to get involved, events, and additional resources to help organizations and individuals participate in the public awareness campaign are available at: www.stalkingawarenessmonth.org and www.ovw.usdoj.gov.
