When two parties exchange personal information and money for goods and services online, each party requires both assurance that their sensitive data remains secure and validation of the other's identity. The patents in this portfolio address these requirements in systems that are reliable, scalable, and robust. With the earliest priority date going back to 1994, the portfolio for sale offers improvements for public-key infrastructure, digital signatures, and electronic payments to better protect consumers and their data from theft and fraud.
"We are excited to offer this versatile patent portfolio of eCommerce consumer protection tools to our global base of buyers. These assets are highly relevant to companies involved in eCommerce, firmware upgrading for devices, data security, fraud protection as well as financial institutions," says Dean Becker, CEO of ICAP Patent Brokerage.
Key Characteristics & Benefits
The IP package comprises 28 issued US patents, their corresponding foreign counterparts, as well as several pending applications, which broadly cover cryptography in eCommerce transactions and/or devices performing such transactions, including:
- Key Escrow: Methods and systems for cryptosystems that verifiably split users' private signature keys into components for transmission to an authorized third party. These keys are embedded with tamper-resistant secure modules to safeguard data against unrestricted access, while enabling normal encryption and decryption if the certificates of both the sender and recipient are validated. Importantly, preferred embodiments provide for rekeying or upgrading the device firmware using a certificate system, and encryption of stream-oriented data.
- Payment Transactions: A method of payment in an electronic payment system wherein a plurality of customers has accounts with an agent and shares a dynamic secret with a respective agent before obtaining an authenticated quote from a specific merchant. The agent facilitates a secure transaction between customer and merchant using the status information and identification of both parties as well as the verifiable digital signature of the agent.
- Split Key Cryptography: Methods and systems for improved security of digital signature systems requiring multiple steps and parties to create a single, composite signature that may be authenticated using a public verification key not easily susceptible to tampering or compromise.
- Digital Rights Management: A method of unpacking digital data, such as software, a cryptographic key, or data representing images, text or video, and digitally signing for such packed data in an electronic transaction. The product is wrapped using a key generated from an acceptance phrase and the end user assents to the various conditions of use of that particular product.
The portfolio also includes assets relating to improvements for reliance and organizational management, authorization, and shared randomness. For details on all technology sectors impacted by this versatile group of assets, please see the technical description of this IP sales offering.
Companies who have cited this portfolio include: First Data Corp, Intel, IBM, HP, Microsoft, Yahoo!, Digimarc, Oracle, American Express, Western Union, Google, RIM, Verisign, AT&T, Cisco, and Visa.
