La Autoridad de Telecomunicaciones de Samoa Americana elige a O3b Networks para prestar servicios de banda ancha satelital de elevada capacidad y baja latencia a partir de este año

La Autoridad de Telecomunicaciones de Samoa Americana (ASTCA, por sus siglas en inglés) y O3b Networks han suscrito acuerdos con el fin de que O3b Networks suministre hasta 1,2 Gbps de conectividad para Internet de banda ancha y demás servicios en Samoa Americana en 2013.

O3b Networks lanzará una constelación de satélites en la órbita terrestre media que prestarán servicios de velocidad de fibra y alcance satelital. Dado que los satélites de O3b orbitan a sólo 8.062 km sobre el planeta, están 4 veces más cerca que los satélites geosincrónicos que han prestado servicios a Samoa Americana hasta ahora. Esta proximidad reduce drásticamente la demora por ida y vuelta en llamadas de voz y navegación Web. La constelación de O3b entrará en servicio durante el tercer trimestre del año.

En la actualidad, el territorio tiene cobertura provista por un único cable submarino de fibra óptica. El rendimiento del enlace satelital de O3b será protegido por una formación de antenas duales de 7,3 metros en el telepuerto Ili'ili de la ASTCA. Gracias a la mayor capacidad, la ASTCA y otros prestadores de servicios podrán ofrecer más servicios de banda ancha a los residentes de Samoa Americana.

Aleki Sene, director ejecutivo de la ASTCA aseguró: “Este acuerdo representa una mejora sustancial en materia de acceso a servicios de banda ancha en Samoa. El servicio de O3b diversifica nuestra ruta con una amplia capacidad de baja latencia. La ASTCA seguirá prestando servicios a través de nuestra fibra óptica submarina en el cable ASH; sin embargo, a partir del primer día de entrada en servicio de la constelación de O3b, la ASTCA duplicará la capacidad de banda ancha para los residentes del territorio. Gracias a este aumento mejorará la velocidad y la estabilidad de la red, garantizando la redundancia en caso de que falle el sistema de fibra óptica”.

Una de las razones de la falta de penetración de la banda ancha en Samoa Americana, que según los estudios, se sitúa en un 4,5% de penetración de Internet, es el costo de los canales de retorno. Tanto las soluciones satelitales tradicionales como las de fibra óptica submarina han estado muy lejos del alcance de la economía local. El acuerdo entre el ASTCA y O3b modifica totalmente el panorama de la banda ancha, porque acerca las capacidades de la fibra óptica a los precios y las condiciones que pueden afrontar los prestadores de servicio de la isla. ASTCA podría ampliar los beneficios de la capacidad de 03b hasta cubrir la totalidad de Samoa.
