Ingenuity Digital Conduct Successful Penguin Recovery for Client

The first Penguin algorithmic update occurred on April 24th, with a refresh appearing in May. In a bid to prevent sites with spammy back link profiles from performing well in the search rankings, Google introduced Penguin to target web spammers. Affected sites with poor link profiles saw drops in rankings and traffic that proved difficult to recover from without sufficient knowledge of why they had been targeted.

As a result, Ingenuity Digital expects the site to return to its pre-Penguin traffic levels over the coming weeks.

Ingenuity Digital would like to stress that manual penalties are not to be confused with Penguin algorithmic updates. A manual penalty will be the result of Google directly penalising a site should they detect unnatural links.

A prominent online pharmaceutical retailer found they had been hit with a manual penalty. After seeing a drop in their traffic and rankings, Ingenuity Digital began an extensive site cleanup to get the site back into Google's good books. When sites receive a manual penalty, they must ensure their site complies with Google's Webmaster Guidelines before submitting their site for reconsideration. Ingenuity Digital developed a link pruning strategy, advised the client on removing site-wide links and conducted a back-link cleanup of links deemed unnatural before submitting the site for reconsideration with Google. Following a thorough back-link profile cleanup, Ingenuity Digital successfully managed to revoke the manual penalty against the site.
