Virgin America Launches First Domestic Lounge: The Virgin America Loft at LAX

Airline Puts a Fresh Twist on the Domestic Lounge: Upscale Design & High-Tech Amenities for the Modern Traveler

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 12, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- This week, Virgin America, the California-based domestic airline, launches its first domestic lounge with the opening of the stylish new Virgin America Loft at Los Angeles International Airport's (LAX) Terminal 3.  Not to be confused with sister-branded airline Virgin Atlantic's premium international Clubhouses designed for longer-haul travelers, the new Virgin America Loft will offer Virgin America's guests a sleek and modern retreat within LAX.  In keeping with the airline's mission to reinvent the U.S. travel experience, the new Virgin America Loft was designed to offer the amenities today's travelers demand within a space that reflects the look and feel of the airline's next generation mood-lit aircraft and overall design aesthetic.  The Virgin America Loft extends the airline's signature cabin experience into the airport space with amenities like a cocktail bar and dining experience with a Virgin twist – including a "Lofty Libations" artisanal cocktail selection.  As the only airline to offer both power outlets near every seat and in-flight WiFi on every aircraft, the Virgin America Loft is equipped with ample power sources and complimentary WiFi.  High-resolution photos and a video tour of the Virgin America Loft are available at: www.virginamerica.com/vx/lax-loft-photos.

"We're proud to unveil our first lounge space at LAX, which was designed for our growing base of loyal business and leisure travelers," said Jim Davis, Vice President of Airports and Guest Services at Virgin America.  "Elevating the journey for travelers beyond just getting from point A to Point B is what Virgin America is all about – and the Virgin America Loft at LAX extends that philosophy into the airport space."

Access:  Elevate® Gold and Elevate Silver members of Virgin America's Elevate frequent flyer program receive a select number of complimentary day passes each year* to the Virgin America Loft and day passes can also be purchased for $40 each through online check-in, at the airport upon check-in and through the Virgin America call center at 1.877.FLY.VIRGIN (877.359.8474).**  Travelers on Virgin America's airline partners may also purchase passes to the Loft.  For more details, including rules and restrictions on Virgin America Loft access see:  www.virginamerica.com/vx/lax-loft. Today, the airline is also launching a "12 Days of #VXLoft Passes" giveaway on social media through December 23 – where 12 lucky people will score a free day pass to check out the new Virgin America Loft in 2013 for themselves. Travelers can follow the airline on Twitter for a chance to score a day pass to the Virgin America Loft.

Location:  The Virgin America Loft is located past security at Terminal 3 of LAX on the second level – conveniently near the Virgin America gates. You can access the Virgin America Loft by taking the stairs or elevator, both located near the food court.

The Virgin America Loft was designed to create a space where travelers can relax, refresh and recharge before their flight:

RELAX:  In addition to re-charging at conveniently placed power charging stations and enjoying complimentary WiFi, the Virgin America Loft provides space to disconnect, have private conversations and enjoy runway views.

REFRESH:  Virgin America offers its award-winning seasonal food menu crafted using fresh locally-sourced ingredients and artisan breads in a Breakfast and Light Bite lunch and dinner selection such as a fresh fruit salad wrap, Otsu Soba noodles, and an assortment of fresh sushi as well as "Lofty Libations" – Virgin and aviation-themed cocktails like the Virgintini and the Runway Ruddy Mary – all complimentary at the Virgin America Loft.

RECHARGE:  Guests will be able to enjoy a social lounge within the Virgin America Loft perfect for socializing, watching Live TV, and meeting someone new.

"Travelers seek out Virgin America for the stylish, upscale experience onboard – and we hoped to create a lounge that reflects the modern and sleek design of our planes and our unique brand style," said Jesse McMillin, Creative Director at Virgin America.  "Travel can be the most transformative experience and we wanted to design the space to help bring that excitement and sense of style back to the airport experience."

The eight-month Virgin America Loft design project was led by McMillin and the airline's Facilities and Marketing teams and includes unique design elements like flaming red Vitra sofas, Frank Gehry tables, Alessi tableware and unique art installations.  Furniture was hand-selected for the space from design partners such as Propeller Modern, Design Within Reach, Zinc Details, Stanhope Company, Golden Gate Sign Company and Blue Skies Consulting.  Local Los Angeles photographer, Dennis McGrath, was commissioned to create exclusive pieces for the Virgin America Loft, which capture a voyeuristic glimpse of the City's gritty, urban landscape.  The black and white photography will add a graphic contrast to the clean aesthetic of the furniture and overall Virgin America Loft design.  For a video tour of the Virgin America Loft given by Virgin America's Creative Director, Jesse McMillin see: http://youtu.be/yKkzg4b6kg4.

Known for its sustainable best practices as well as its inventive design, Virgin America incorporated flooring that consists of 85 percent post-consumer recycled material into the new lounge space.  In 2011, the airline opened its new home at SFO's Terminal 2 – the first major LEED® Gold-certified airport in the nation.  Just this year, Virgin America's further investment in its "Virgin Village" teammate lounge at SFO helped secure the highest possible LEED® Platinum-certification for the carrier's own T2 office spaces. Both the Gold and Platinum levels are the first such certifications for a major commercial airport in the U.S.

With outstanding service, beautiful design and a host of inventive amenities, Virgin America has built a loyal flyer following since its 2007 launch.  The airline has swept the major travel awards for its focus on design and service, including "Best Domestic Airline" in Conde Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice Awards and Travel + Leisure's World's Best Awards.  The airline's Red™ in-flight entertainment platform offers guests their own seatback touch-screen TV, with 25 films, live TV, Google Maps, videogames, a 4,000 song library and an on-demand menu – so flyers can order a cocktail or snack from their seatback any time during a flight. The airline is the first domestic carrier to offer both standard power outlets at every seat and in-flight WiFi on every flight. In addition to a Main Cabin that offers custom-designed leather seats with a deeper pitch, the carrier's premium Main Cabin Select service offers guests 38" of seat pitch – about 6 inches more legroom than Main Cabin, unlimited complimentary cocktails and snacks from the airline's award-winning menu, an all-access pass to in-flight media content (including free movies and premium TV like HBO and Showtime and content from partners like Virgin Produced), priority security access/boarding, dedicated overhead bin space and one free checked bag.  Virgin America's First Class features international-grade amenities and plush white leather seating with 55 inches of pitch, 165 degrees of recline and lumbar massagers.

Continuing to invest in its product is a priority for the airline – which unveiled a new uniform design just this summer and launched a suite of enhancements to its Elevate frequent flyer program – including new Elevate Gold and Elevate Silver Status levels that include perks such as: points earning bonuses, priority check-in, security clearance and boarding; free checked bag allowances; enhanced digital/social rewards; private discounts; an expanded advance purchase upgrade window for the airline's exclusive eight-seat First Class; complimentary space-available upgrades to the carrier's premium Main Cabin Select service; and complimentary access to the best seat assignments within Main Cabin.  Virgin America's latest advertising campaign offers a digital experience that brings the airline's unique cabins to life – through the eyes of a few of its most frequent travelers: http://experiencevirginamerica.com.

Virgin America flies to San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Washington D.C. (IAD), Las Vegas, San Diego, Seattle, Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Cabos, Cancun, Chicago, Puerto Vallarta, Palm Springs, Philadelphia, Portland and Washington D.C.'s Reagan National (DCA) and starting April 2, 2013 - Newark.

2015 predictions circa 1970: houses anticipate our needs and adapt, city infrastructure is citizen and situation aware, office buildings identify and preprocess you. Today smart buildings have no such collective conscience, no shared set of fundamental services to identify, predict and synchronize around us. LiveSpace and M2Mi are changing that. LiveSpace Smart Environment devices deliver over the M2Mi IoT Platform real time presence, awareness and intent analytics as a service to local connected devices. In her session at @ThingsExpo, Sarah Cooper, VP Business of Development at M2Mi, will d...
The Industrial Internet revolution is now underway, enabled by connected machines and billions of devices that communicate and collaborate. The massive amounts of Big Data requiring real-time analysis is flooding legacy IT systems and giving way to cloud environments that can handle the unpredictable workloads. Yet many barriers remain until we can fully realize the opportunities and benefits from the convergence of machines and devices with Big Data and the cloud, including interoperability, data security and privacy.
Explosive growth in connected devices. Enormous amounts of data for collection and analysis. Critical use of data for split-second decision making and actionable information. All three are factors in making the Internet of Things a reality. Yet, any one factor would have an IT organization pondering its infrastructure strategy. How should your organization enhance its IT framework to enable an Internet of Things implementation? In this session, James Kirkland, Red Hat's Chief Architect for the Internet of Things and Intelligent Systems, will describe how to revolutionize your architecture and...
The Internet of Things is tied together with a thin strand that is known as time. Coincidentally, at the core of nearly all data analytics is a timestamp. When working with time series data there are a few core principles that everyone should consider, especially across datasets where time is the common boundary. In his session at Internet of @ThingsExpo, Jim Scott, Director of Enterprise Strategy & Architecture at MapR Technologies, discussed single-value, geo-spatial, and log time series data. By focusing on enterprise applications and the data center, he will use OpenTSDB as an example t...
We’re entering a new era of computing technology that many are calling the Internet of Things (IoT). Machine to machine, machine to infrastructure, machine to environment, the Internet of Everything, the Internet of Intelligent Things, intelligent systems – call it what you want, but it’s happening, and its potential is huge. IoT is comprised of smart machines interacting and communicating with other machines, objects, environments and infrastructures. As a result, huge volumes of data are being generated, and that data is being processed into useful actions that can “command and control” thi...
All major researchers estimate there will be tens of billions devices - computers, smartphones, tablets, and sensors - connected to the Internet by 2020. This number will continue to grow at a rapid pace for the next several decades. With major technology companies and startups seriously embracing IoT strategies, now is the perfect time to attend @ThingsExpo, June 9-11, 2015, at the Javits Center in New York City. Learn what is going on, contribute to the discussions, and ensure that your enterprise is as "IoT-Ready" as it can be
Scott Jenson leads a project called The Physical Web within the Chrome team at Google. Project members are working to take the scalability and openness of the web and use it to talk to the exponentially exploding range of smart devices. Nearly every company today working on the IoT comes up with the same basic solution: use my server and you'll be fine. But if we really believe there will be trillions of these devices, that just can't scale. We need a system that is open a scalable and by using the URL as a basic building block, we open this up and get the same resilience that the web enjoys.
We are reaching the end of the beginning with WebRTC, and real systems using this technology have begun to appear. One challenge that faces every WebRTC deployment (in some form or another) is identity management. For example, if you have an existing service – possibly built on a variety of different PaaS/SaaS offerings – and you want to add real-time communications you are faced with a challenge relating to user management, authentication, authorization, and validation. Service providers will want to use their existing identities, but these will have credentials already that are (hopefully) i...
SYS-CON Events announced today that MetraTech, now part of Ericsson, has been named “Silver Sponsor” of SYS-CON's 16th International Cloud Expo®, which will take place on June 9–11, 2015, at the Javits Center in New York, NY. Ericsson is the driving force behind the Networked Society- a world leader in communications infrastructure, software and services. Some 40% of the world’s mobile traffic runs through networks Ericsson has supplied, serving more than 2.5 billion subscribers.
Thanks to widespread Internet adoption and more than 10 billion connected devices around the world, companies became more excited than ever about the Internet of Things in 2014. Add in the hype around Google Glass and the Nest Thermostat, and nearly every business, including those from traditionally low-tech industries, wanted in. But despite the buzz, some very real business questions emerged – mainly, not if a device can be connected, or even when, but why? Why does connecting to the cloud create greater value for the user? Why do connected features improve the overall experience? And why do...

Imagine a world where targeting, attribution, and analytics are just as intrinsic to the physical world as they currently are to display advertising. Advances in technologies and changes in consumer behavior have opened the door to a whole new category of personalized marketing experience based on direct interactions with products. The products themselves now have a voice. What will they say? Who will control it? And what does it take for brands to win in this new world? In his session at @ThingsExpo, Zack Bennett, Vice President of Customer Success at EVRYTHNG, will answer these questions a...
The 4th International Internet of @ThingsExpo, co-located with the 17th International Cloud Expo - to be held November 3-5, 2015, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA - announces that its Call for Papers is open. The Internet of Things (IoT) is the biggest idea since the creation of the Worldwide Web more than 20 years ago.
The Internet of Things is a misnomer. That implies that everything is on the Internet, and that simply should not be - especially for things that are blurring the line between medical devices that stimulate like a pacemaker and quantified self-sensors like a pedometer or pulse tracker. The mesh of things that we manage must be segmented into zones of trust for sensing data, transmitting data, receiving command and control administrative changes, and peer-to-peer mesh messaging. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Ryan Bagnulo, Solution Architect / Software Engineer at SOA Software, focused on desi...
An entirely new security model is needed for the Internet of Things, or is it? Can we save some old and tested controls for this new and different environment? In his session at @ThingsExpo, New York's at the Javits Center, Davi Ottenheimer, EMC Senior Director of Trust, reviewed hands-on lessons with IoT devices and reveal a new risk balance you might not expect. Davi Ottenheimer, EMC Senior Director of Trust, has more than nineteen years' experience managing global security operations and assessments, including a decade of leading incident response and digital forensics. He is co-author of t...
The multi-trillion economic opportunity around the "Internet of Things" (IoT) is emerging as the hottest topic for investors in 2015. As we connect the physical world with information technology, data from actions, processes and the environment can increase sales, improve efficiencies, automate daily activities and minimize risk. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Ed Maguire, Senior Analyst at CLSA Americas, will describe what is new and different about IoT, explore financial, technological and real-world impact across consumer and business use cases. Why now? Significant corporate and venture...
While great strides have been made relative to the video aspects of remote collaboration, audio technology has basically stagnated. Typically all audio is mixed to a single monaural stream and emanates from a single point, such as a speakerphone or a speaker associated with a video monitor. This leads to confusion and lack of understanding among participants especially regarding who is actually speaking. Spatial teleconferencing introduces the concept of acoustic spatial separation between conference participants in three dimensional space. This has been shown to significantly improve comprehe...
Today’s enterprise is being driven by disruptive competitive and human capital requirements to provide enterprise application access through not only desktops, but also mobile devices. To retrofit existing programs across all these devices using traditional programming methods is very costly and time consuming – often prohibitively so. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Jesse Shiah, CEO, President, and Co-Founder of AgilePoint Inc., discussed how you can create applications that run on all mobile devices as well as laptops and desktops using a visual drag-and-drop application – and eForms-buildi...
There will be 150 billion connected devices by 2020. New digital businesses have already disrupted value chains across every industry. APIs are at the center of the digital business.
