NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 12/12/12 -- Mobile devices running Apple's iOS operating system continue to dominate the small and medium-sized business (SMB) market according to Intermedia, a global leader in cloud services and the largest Microsoft hosted Exchange provider. For the last three months of available data (September through November 2012), Apple's iOS operating system was the clear leader in new device activations among Intermedia SMBs with 68.2 percent of all mobile device activations. Google's Android operating system followed Apple with 25.1 percent, while BlackBerry ranked third with 4.1 percent, and Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system ranked fourth with 2.6 percent.
Intermedia's SMB Mobility Trends Snapshot
Intermedia, which manages more than 500,000 premium hosted Exchange email accounts, including the newest platform Exchange 2013, reviewed the number of smartphones its customers activated to sync their email, contacts, and calendars. Intermedia's business email and collaboration cloud services support the full range of smartphones and tablets, including iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows. The leading business cloud service provider's latest mobile operating system activation data includes numbers from September, October, and November.
- Total breakdown of smartphone activation:
- Apple: 68.2 percent
- Android: 25.1 percent
- BlackBerry: 4.1 percent
- Windows: 2.6 percent
- Total breakdown of tablet activation:
- Apple iPad: 92.6 percent
- BlackBerry Playbook: 5.3 percent
- Windows Surface: 2.1 percent
- Windows Surface popularity: Surface activations grew 45 percent month-over-month since it arrived in stores in late October.
- iPhone 5 helps spike Apple activations: iPhone 5 hit stores in late September and in the first month Apple device activations jumped 22 percent.
"Our customers are using their smartphones and tablets like never before," says Michael Gold, president, Intermedia. "For example, they are using Hosted PBX to route calls to their mobile devices; they can read voicemails as emails while in a meeting; and they can access their data via Cloud Server. Just as importantly, admins can log in to the HostPilot® Mobile App and manage their accounts without being tied to the office. With their business communications in a secure, business-grade cloud, users have anywhere, anytime mobile access to their messaging, contacts, calendars, files, and applications. Without Intermedia's platform of cloud services, this would be a resource challenge for small and mid-sized businesses to set up, secure, and manage on their own."
Intermedia brings Fortune 50-level IT services to small and medium-sized businesses, giving them the tools and resources to compete like much larger enterprises. The company's Office in the Cloud offering combines Intermedia's services for backup, mobility, security, voice, and more, with popular Microsoft services such as Exchange, Lync, and SharePoint. This integrated suite of cloud communications and collaboration services is managed from Intermedia's proprietary HostPilot Control Panel, providing customers a single point of communications control in an intuitive user interface. The company recently launched hosted Exchange 2013, SharePoint 2013 and Lync 2013 -- the newest versions of these popular solutions.
