Last month at METS, France Helices quietly debuted its’ latest SDS surface drive model, SDS1. SDS1 is now available for sale to France Helices’ customers, and is intended as a surface drive option for very small, fast, vessels.
SDS1 was developed after we received a number of requests from customers as an alternative to using outboard engines for propulsion. Traditionally, outboards have been a popular means of propulsion due to their low acquisition costs and wide availability of spare parts. The downsides to using outboard motors are their short life cycle (often under 1,000 hours) and limited performance capability. Now, a pair of small inboards, with gearboxes and SDS1 can be competitively priced against larger outboard motors, delivering faster speeds and far greater reliability.
The SDS1 is suitable for engines producing torque between 170 and 182 kg.m. In general, this equates to a vessel size of 8 to 10 meters LOA, with engines under 300 bhp. We are currently updating our software to offer the SDS1, and retail pricing is far cheaper than that on small water jets.
