Google and Bing have never gotten along. The latest battle between the world’s largest search engine and its closest competitor is about the holidays. The issue? Bing is warning online shoppers not to get Scroogled this year. What does that mean? It seems that if you visit Google Shopping, which can be found at google.com/shopping, the listings you’ll see are from companies that have paid for the placement. It’s called pay-to-rank and Bing says that Google is Scroogling you by showing products that pay to get your attention. This has nothing to do with regular Google searches; it is completely about results you will get by searching on Google’s Shopping site. Which begs for the question, what happens when you search the same products on Bing? Well, customers who shop on Bing may get binged because Bing use a very similar pay-to-rank model as well. What to do? As always, check prices everywhere before you decide where to make a purchase.
