IBM has a big problem, Telcos using Big Data and more

By

Here are the top tech news and stories of the day.

  • IBM has a big problem - In 2012, IBM failed their internal security audit. This has pushed off their annual review as a result. After IBM’s huge off-shoring push, correcting these security issues might be (almost) impossible. Via BetaNews, more here.
  • How telcos are using big data to set prices and maybe make bills better - Guavus, a streaming data analysis firm, has released its latest product, aimed at the telco market to help operators process about half a petabyte daily. Some telcos have already identified anomalies and used it to find violators of TOU. It is possible this data could be used to help telcos find tiers that are better suited to users as well. • Apple TV no longer just a hobby, now an area of ‘intense interest’ - One of the tidbits gleaned from Tim Cook’s conference call today was Apple’s commitment to the Apple TV. Cook stated “when I go into my living room and turn on the TV, I feel like I have gone backwards in time by 20 to 30 years.” He also called the device an ‘intense interest’ of the firm. • Bloomberg: Foxconn plans US expansion to fill demand for American-made products - Foxconn, the manufacturer of most of Apple’s mobile electronics, announced plans to begin manufacturing in the US. Foxconn is profitable due to their ability to exploit cheap labor, long work days, and few safety regulations so it’ll be interesting to see how they do with OSHA. Via Engadget, more here.
  • Happy Endings: Google Reportedly Working On Parental Controls For Chrome - it’s silly to think that any demographic will not be involved in computing right now, Google is attempting to gain marketshare with schools and parents via parental controls. It will be possible to create less privileged users that cannot choose their own settings. This should play well with marketing the Chromebook as both an educational and family device. • Citrix, now all about mobility, buys Zenprise to boost BYOD effort - Citrix is apparently (and wisely) going all in on mobile. If BYOD is happening in the government (which it is), it will certainly be happening in every enterprise. Zenprise offers an additional layer of security to mobile devices. Via GigaOM, more here.
  • Apple Will Move Mac Production to the US in 2013 - According to CEO, Tim Cook, Apple will be moving part of their Mac manufacturing to the US soon. They are investing over $100M in this venue, which might be for the new slim iMacs. Via Gizmodo, more here.
