Old, new guitarDeux événements, en apparence mineurs et non corrélés, ont eu lieu cette semaine, la conférence des utilisateurs d’AWS (Amazon Web Services) et l’annonce de nouvelles versions de produits historiques de Microsoft : Office, Exchange et Sharepoint.

Pourquoi les rapprocher ? Ils m’ont donné l’idée de ce billet et permettent de mieux comprendre le fossé gigantesque qui est en train de se creuser entre deux mondes informatiques, l’Ancien Monde, artisanal, et celui de la R2I, Révolution Industrielle Informatique.

 

AWS re:Invent

AWS ReInventPour la première fois depuis sa création en 2006, AWS, la branche IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) de la société Amazon, organisait re:Invent, une conférence internationale pour ses clients et partenaires.

Hp-logoEst-ce un signe ? Le nom de cette conférence, « re:invent » ressemble étrangement à la devise « Invent » d’un grand fournisseur historique, HP, dont le moins que l’on puisse dire est qu’il n’est pas dans une forme exceptionnelle. Est-on en train d’assister à un passage de la flamme olympique ?

Pendant les deux jours de cette manifestation, plus de 9 000 personnes ont participé à des dizaines de conférences et débats.

Fortune Bezos, manager of the year sC’était aussi l’occasion pour les dirigeants d’Amazon et AWS, Jeff Bezos en tête, de faire de nombreuses annonces, de nouveaux produits et de réduction des prix de vente de nombreux services existants ; c’est sur ce dernier point que je vais centrer mon analyse.

Coïncidence heureuse pour Amazon, c’est aussi le moment choisi par la revue Fortune pour annoncer que le « manager de l’année 2012 » est... Jeff Bezos, CEO d’Amazon.

 

Un monde R2I, où la concurrence fait rage...

AWS vs GCE boxingAvec AWS,  lancé en 2006, Amazon a pris tout le monde de vitesse, devenant le numéro un mondial de l’IaaS. Les analystes financiers estiment qu’AWS génèrera entre 1,6 et 2 milliards de dollars de CA en 2012.

Au début de l’année 2012, l’autre poids lourd du Cloud, Google, a lancé GCE (Google Compute Engine), sa solution IaaS en concurrence avec AWS et propose des prix... plus bas qu’AWS sur les serveurs et le stockage sur disques.

AWS S3 price reduction (24)A l’ouverture de la conférence re:Invent, Amazon annonce une baisse de prix de 24 à 28 %, pour coller aux prix de GCE pour le stockage.

Google cloud pricing reductionQu’à cela ne tienne ; immédiatement, GCE annonce une nouvelle baisse de prix de 10 % pour rester moins cher qu’AWS !

Résultat des courses et de cette saine compétition entre AWS et GCE ; les entreprises qui payaient, en novembre 2012, 0,125 $ par mois pour 1GB vont voir la facture passer à 0,095 $ en décembre 2012 chez AWS et 0,085 $ chez GCE, une réduction de 32 % !

On retrouve dans cet exemple le fonctionnement sain et normal de la concurrence qui fait profiter les clients des améliorations de performance des technologies, comme nous en avons profité depuis longtemps pour les PC et autres matériels informatiques.

Barrier to entryC’est la 24e fois depuis 2006 qu’AWS baisse ses prix ! Derrière cette guerre de géants, bénéfique pour les clients, il y a aussi une stratégie économique très claire,que l’on nomme « barrière à l’entrée ». 

En maintenant une marge faible et raisonnable, en baissant en permanence leurs prix de vente pour faire profiter leurs clients des gains de productivité liés aux économies d’échelle, AWS et GCE rendent de plus en plus difficile l’entrée de concurrents moins puissants, moins industriels.

Vendre, en 2012, des solutions de stockage à 0,085 $ le GB par mois sans perdre d’argent, c’est tout sauf facile !
Dans ces métiers informatiques industriels, il n’y a plus de place pour les amateurs, les bricoleurs.

 

Et pendant ce temps...

Microsoft increase prices for Office Server s... Microsoft annonce les nouvelles versions de produits très anciens et en profite pour... augmenter les prix.

Difficile d’accuser Mary Jo Foley, qui a écrit ce blllet, de sectarisme quand on sait qu’elle gagne sa vie en faisant, depuis plus de 20 ans, un blog et des analyses exclusivement centrés sur les solutions de Microsoft.

Microsoft new prices sAu 1er décembre 2012, les prix de vente officiels des nouvelles versions de Sharepoint, Exchange et autres Lync vont augmenter, et beaucoup, comme le montre ce tableau. C’est Sharepoint qui vire en tête avec une augmentation de 38 % !

 

Difficile à avaler !

Data center storageD’un côté, des ressources « physiques », puissance de calcul et stockage, dont les prix baissent de 30 % et plus, et en permanence. Les téraoctets d’AWS doivent être stockés sur des disques physiques, qu’il faut acheter, alimenter en électricité et qui demandent beaucoup de m2.

Exchange server DVDDe l’autre, des ressources « immatérielles », les logiciels traditionnels, dont les prix de vente augmentent en permanence, alors que leur coût marginal de production est voisin de zéro.

Baisse de 32 % pour stocker vos données sur AWS, hausse de 38 % de Sharepoint ! Vous trouvez cela normal, logique ? Moi, pas vraiment !

 

Performances financières comparées : Amazon vs Microsoft

D’un côté, Amazon, avec des marges très faibles, de l’ordre de 2 %, et qui vient en plus d’annoncer des pertes sur son dernier trimestre.

De l’autre, Microsoft, avec des marges pantagruéliques dans ses divisions Office et Windows, comme le montrent les derniers chiffres publiés.

Les marges nettes de la division Business (Office, Exchange, Sharepoint... ) sont de 66 %

Amazon vs MS Share price 5 yearsCe graphique compare les évolutions boursières, sur les cinq dernières années, des cours de Microsoft et Amazon.

  • 100 $ investis en 2008 sur Microsoft en valent aujourd’hui 75.
  • 100 $ investis en 2008 sur Amazon en valent aujourd’hui plus de 250.

Pour être complet, il faut tenir compte du fait que Microsoft est devenue une société de rendement qui distribue des dividendes tous les trimestres, à l’inverse d’Amazon ; les différences de performances restent quand même spectaculaires.

Croissance, innovation, démarche industrielle, marges faibles contre rendement, offres stabilisées et marges très élevées : les investisseurs ont tranché en faveur du premier.

 

De l’anti-Microsoft primaire ?

Anti microsoft imageOn me reproche souvent de faire de « l’anti Microsoft » primaire, ce qui n’est absolument pas le cas. 

Simplement, il est difficile de parler de l’informatique historique sans faire référence au leader de cet Ancien Monde, Microsoft, qui équipe encore 90 % des postes de travail historiques obèses (Windows + Office) et plus de 60 % des solutions, en fin de vie, de communication et collaboration (participatique), avec Exchange et Sharepoint.

 

Choisir son camp

Pour les dirigeants et les responsables informatiques, ce choc des cultures est brutal ; ils ont en face d’eux :

  • Old mapLa majorité des grands acteurs de l’informatique, avec qui ils avaient tissé des liens forts au cours des 20 dernières années, avant la R2I, et qui continuent à se comporter comme des « malfrats » cherchant à tirer le maximum d’argent de clients qu’ils considèrent comme captifs ou membres d’une secte et prêts à tout accepter.
  • Start keys in cloud sDe nouveaux acteurs, qu’ils ne connaissent pas bien, dont les méthodes industrielles de vente les déstabilisent : pas de dizaines de commerciaux qui viennent les voir, des prix affichés qui ne se discutent pas... mais qui proposent des services d’infrastructures et d’applications de plus en plus performants, à des prix qui baissent en permanence. 

Good choice, bad choiceDirigeants et DSI, avec qui souhaitez-vous construire vos systèmes d’information des 10 prochaines années ?

  • Ces nouveaux industriels, champions de la R2I, qui font en permanence profiter leurs clients de l’amélioration de leur productivité sous forme de baisses de prix ou d’accroissement des fonctionnalités à coût constant.
  • Les anciens combattants de l’informatique « bricolage », qui, malgré des marges brutes qui flirtent avec les 90 %, essaient de tirer le maximum de leurs vaches à lait en augmentant les prix des licences ou des contrats de maintenance.

Est-ce vraiment un choix très difficile ?
