Cloud News

  • Netflix announced that it has released the code for its Edda tool which allows for rapid querying and reporting on Amazon Web Services resources, according to this GigaOM article. The open source code is now available on Github.

  • Australian scientists are using Google’s cloud to deliver maps, tools, and data about the Australian landscape to land managers, according to this Farm Weekly article. Users will have access to a vegetation monitoring tool which will allow them to look at the health of the landscape and monitor risks such as pests, diseases, and fire.

  • Microsoft announced that they have signed a licensing pact with 21 Vianet, an Internet data center services provider in China, which will now offer Windows Azure services, according to the GigaOM article. Forrester research predicts that the Chinese cloud market will be worth $3.8 billion by 2020.

Cloud Standards and Innovation

Cloud computing has been written about extensively. Yet just when you thought that everything you wanted to know about clouds has been covered, along comes a new book by Marv Waschke suggesting that you look at cloud computing from another angle. Standards anyone? In "Cloud Standards: Agreements That Hold Together Clouds," Waschke argues that without the standards that keep all of its component technologies from varied sources working together, cloud computing as we know it today would not be possible.

Add to that, without standards, innovation in the cloud would not be possible-or at a minimum would be severely hampered. Read the full article.
