Here are today’s top mobile news and stories.
- Google Maps For iOS Will Be Ready By End Of Year, But Google Isn’t Sure Apple Will Approve It - In a move many expected, Google will have a standalone app ready for iOS by the end of the year. However, they are unsure if it will actually be accepted into the AppStore, due to Apple’s increasing need to save face. Even though Scott Forstall is gone, no one is sure how Apple will react to a Google Maps application. It is my belief that they will have to allow it in the AppStore, because spitting in the face of Google (and the collective 3rd party who develops for iOS) is just too much. - Apple announces three million new iPads sold in just three days, “practically sold out of iPad minis” - Apple has announced that they sold over 3M iPad since they went on sale Friday. These were the WiFi only models of the iPad (both iPad 4 and iPad Mini). Via 9to5Mac, more here.
- Samsung has already sold 3M Galaxy Note 2 units - The Galaxy Note II has only been available for a few months, and it has already sold over 3M units. It took almost a year for the original Galaxy Note to pass 10M in sales, and it seems that the Note II shall surpass that in the near future. Via Droid-Life, more here.
- iPad Mini teardown finds $188 in components, LG display - iSuppli found that the WiFi 16GB model costs only $188 to build, with the 32/64GB coming in at $278, $360 respectively (prices are $329/429/529 margins which are far lower than typical Apple products). Apparently, it was impossible for Apple to get down to the prices that Amazon and Google sell 7″ tablets. Via 9to5 Mac, more here.
- Android 4.2 Transformation Pack is available for the Galaxy Nexus - If you have a Galaxy Nexus (rooted) and are looking for an early look at Android 4.2, you can flash the zip in any custom recovery. You will receive the Nexus 4 lockscreen, new Gmail, Gallery, sounds and Clock. Via BetaNews, more here.
- Best Buy offering 15% off iTunes gift cards (20% for rewards members) - Today only, Best Buy is offering deeply discounted iTunes gift cards. Via 9to5 Mac, more here.
- On Android’s 4th Birthday, it has claimed 75% of Smartphone handsets sold in Q3. These numbers come from IDC and even have a remarkable table that charts the immense growth of the OS over just a few scant years. Via Droid-Life, more here.
