Here is today’s top tech news.
-
- It’s a happy day for all you Android hackers out there, AOKP has released their first (official) code for Jelly Bean - while there have been “nightlies” for a while, the first release is the best. If you have a rooted Android device, head over to AOKP to check out what they have to offer (here).
- Amazon announces “Glacier” - which they call a ‘secure, reliable and extremely low cost storage solution.’ Amazon claims that this data service will be excellent for rarely accessed data, and offer costs as low as 1 penny/GB/month. Via TechCrunch, more here.
- Verizon blocking vacations in September for the iPhone 5 - this report, from Droid-Life, has VZW employees reported that they are not allowed vacation in the second half of September to get ready for the glut of customers looking for the newest iPhone. More here.
- VMware virtual machines targeted by “Crisis” espionage malware - one of the hopes of using VMs is some safety from malware (or at least an additional line between it), but researchers have uncovered a single attack that can infect across platforms. We’ve covered cross-platform attacks in the past, and this one seems particularly ingenious. Via Ars Technica, more here.
- Clipix releases their QR code generator - Clipix is a capability to allow QR code reading, generation storage and bookmarking capabilities. What you scan, will be saved to your Clipix account for further perusal. Via TechCrunch, more here.
- Nexus 7 sales could reach 8M by the end of the year – One analyst is estimating that the Google Nexus 7 could hit that number. While I believe it is surely selling well (and has not begun to sell in Europe yet), Apple’s iPad Mini will be a significant disruptor in the mini-tablet realm, but only if they can reach the magic $200 price point. Via ComputerWorld, more here.
- The Fair Labor Association is reporting that Apple and Foxconn are making improvements - one of the largest tech-related new stories of last year was the despicable environment in Foxconn factories. Apple, who uses Foxconn to manufacture their devices, came under huge scrutiny. To be fair, Samsung has been recently accused of similar misdeeds. Via Ars Technica, more here.
- Google Play is officially selling gift cards to the Play Store - This is a great move for Google. One of Apple’s largest streams of incomes is the iTunes store, and Google needs to keep up. I know that I have spent almost all of my allotment that came with my Nexus 7 (it makes it easier when the money is free!). Via Google, more here.
- Codethink launches little Linux ARM servers with 8 quad-core CPUs per node - ARM computing coming to servers has been rumored for a while. The processors can offer lower power consumption while enabling a high degree of GPU computing, or RAM usage. Via Ars Technica, more here.
- Terrific iPhone 5 parody (I’m looking at your Instagram users)
